OpenAI spent yesterday on languages that rarely show up in coding benches. The lab published MultiLangBench and a COBOL migration test, scoring GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol on those tasks. AWS shipped two cloud changes the same day: structured JSON for every Claude model on Bedrock, and a SageMaker Studio door that opens with Amazon, Apple, GitHub, or Google.

OpenAI MultiLangBench and COBOL migration evals
OpenAI posted Advancing coding in low-resource programming languages on Oct 19. MultiLangBench asks a model to build a SQLite-compatible database engine from scratch in 20 languages. A second evaluation migrates COBOL to C++, Java, Kotlin, Python, or Rust with byte-for-byte behavioral parity. The post is an evaluation, not a GPT-6 launch.1
The lab reports GPT-6 Astra passed 87.4 percent of MultiLangBench tests on average, versus 26.8 percent for GPT-5.6 Sol. COBOL moved from 10.9 percent to 72.1 percent and remains the hardest of the twenty. OCaml went from 25.6 percent to 85.8 percent, Fortran from 21.4 to 83.5, Visual Basic from 27.5 to 89.4. Astra cleared 83 percent in 19 of 20 languages.
GPT-6 Luna scored 40.3 percent at a lower estimated API cost of $0.77 versus $3.48 per sample. Per-language results sit on GitHub.2
On COBOL migration, OpenAI reports GPT-6.1 Sol at 86.6 percent with low reasoning versus 5.4 percent for GPT-5.6 Sol, and 97.9 percent at higher reasoning. The post still says production work needs expert review.
Bedrock structured outputs for all Claude models
Amazon Bedrock now supports structured outputs for all Anthropic Claude models on the bedrock-runtime and bedrock-mantle endpoints, where the model is available. JSON Schema plus strict tool use, AWS says, yields schema-compliant JSON without custom parsing, retry logic, or post-processing. The change is a runtime feature for Claude on Bedrock.3
SageMaker Studio social sign-in
New SageMaker AI customers can land in a configured Studio environment in a few steps. AWS times that walkthrough at about 20 seconds. Sign-up uses Amazon, Apple, GitHub, or Google. Most customers, the company says, skip an advanced AWS account and a credit card, and receive $100 in Free Tier credits, with a chance at another $100. This is Studio onboarding.4
